Other Names For Vanda Orchids
Vanda, Vandaceous Orchid, Strap-Leaf Vanda, Terete-Leaf Vanda, Semi-Terete Vanda, Ascocenda (Ascda.), Ascocentrum, Rhynchostylis, Aerides, Papilionanthe, Neofinetia (now classified within Vanda), Mokara (Vanda hybrid), Vanda Alliance Orchids.
The term “Vanda” is often used broadly in horticulture to describe not only true Vanda species but also a wide range of closely related hybrids within the Vanda alliance. Some of the names above (such as Ascocenda or Mokara) refer to intergeneric hybrids that contain strong Vanda parentage and share similar care needs, flower shape, and growth habits. While not all of these are technically pure Vandas, they are commonly grouped together in the trade due to their comparable appearance and cultivation requirements.
Caring For Your Vanda Orchid
Lighting
Very bright light is essential for Vanda orchids — significantly more than Phalaenopsis or Cambria types. A south- or west-facing window is ideal, where the plant can receive several hours of strong, indirect light and even some gentle direct sun. Insufficient light is the most common reason Vandas fail to flower. Leaves should be a light to medium green; very dark leaves usually indicate the plant needs more light.
Watering
Vandas require far more frequent watering than most other orchids because they are typically grown with exposed aerial roots and little to no potting medium. In warm, bright conditions, roots may need watering daily — especially in summer. In cooler or darker months, watering can be reduced to every 2–3 days. Thoroughly drench the roots with lukewarm water and allow them to dry slightly between waterings, but never leave them dry for long periods.
Humidity
High humidity is very important for Vandas, ideally between 60% and 80%. Their exposed root systems absorb moisture directly from the air, so dry indoor environments can quickly lead to dehydration. Use a humidifier, regular misting, or place the plant in naturally humid rooms like kitchens or bathrooms with good light. Good air circulation is also essential to prevent fungal issues.
Temperature
Vandas are warm-growing orchids and prefer higher temperatures than most other common varieties. Daytime temperatures should ideally be between 21°C and 30°C. Night temperatures should not drop below 15°C. Unlike Cambrias, Vandas do not require a strong temperature drop at night to flower, but consistent warmth encourages active growth and blooming.
Fertilisation
Feed Vandas regularly during active growth as frequent watering flushes nutrients away quickly. Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at a weak strength (“little and often”) 1–2 times per week in spring and summer. In winter, reduce feeding to every 2–3 weeks. Occasionally flush roots with plain water to prevent fertiliser salt build-up.
Repotting / Mounting
Vandas are rarely grown in traditional pots. They are usually placed in slatted wooden baskets or grown bare-root to allow maximum airflow around the roots. Repotting is only needed every few years, typically when the plant outgrows its basket. Avoid trimming healthy aerial roots, as they are vital for hydration and nutrient absorption.
About Vanda Orchids
Vanda orchids belong to the Vanda genus, a group of tropical orchids native to regions of Southeast Asia, the Philippines, New Guinea, and northern Australia. Unlike many common houseplant orchids, Vandas are typically epiphytic, meaning they grow naturally attached to trees rather than in soil. Their long, exposed aerial roots absorb moisture and nutrients directly from the air, which is why they are often displayed in baskets with little to no potting medium.
Vanda orchids are part of the broader Vanda alliance, a horticultural grouping that includes closely related genera frequently used in hybridising. This alliance contains orchids such as Ascocentrum, Rhynchostylis, Aerides, and Papilionanthe, many of which have been bred with Vandas to create vibrant, large-flowered hybrids. Popular commercial hybrids like Ascocenda (now largely reclassified within Vanda) and Mokara are valued for their intense colours, flat flower shape, and long-lasting blooms.
Vandas are especially prized for their large, vividly coloured flowers, which can appear in shades of blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, red, and white — often with striking patterns or tessellated markings. Some species, such as Vanda coerulea, are famous for producing rare blue-toned blooms, a colour seldom seen in orchids. With proper light and warmth, Vanda orchids can flower multiple times per year, producing impressive, arching sprays that make them favourites among collectors and interior plant enthusiasts alike.
