They are commonly called Lady’s Slipper Orchids due to this unique flower shape. In horticulture, Paphiopedilums are often grouped by leaf type (mottled or plain green) or by flower form (such as Maudiae or multifloral hybrids). While many plants sold under these names are hybrids rather than wild species, they share similar care needs and the same iconic slipper-shaped bloom that defines the Paphiopedilum group.

Caring For Your Paphiopedilum Orchid

Lighting
Paphiopedilum orchids prefer moderate, indirect light and are less tolerant of strong sun than many other orchids. An east- or north-facing window is ideal, or a slightly shaded spot near a brighter window. Avoid direct midday sunlight, as their leaves can scorch easily. Mottled-leaf varieties generally prefer slightly lower light than solid green-leaf types.

Watering
Unlike many orchids, Paphiopedilums do not have pseudobulbs to store water, so they should not be allowed to dry out completely. Water when the top of the compost begins to feel slightly dry, keeping the growing medium lightly moist at all times. This usually means watering every 5–7 days, depending on temperature and season. Use lukewarm water and avoid letting the plant sit in waterlogged compost.

Humidity
Paphiopedilums enjoy moderate humidity, ideally between 40% and 60%. They are generally more tolerant of normal household conditions than many tropical orchids, but very dry air can cause leaf tips to brown. A humidity tray or placing plants near each other can help create a gentle, more humid microclimate.

Temperature
Most Paphiopedilum orchids prefer cool to intermediate temperatures. Daytime temperatures between 18°C and 24°C are ideal, with nights dropping slightly cooler. Mottled-leaf types often prefer warmer conditions, while green-leaf varieties can tolerate cooler nights. Avoid sudden temperature swings or cold drafts.

Fertilisation
Feed with a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every 2–3 weeks during active growth. Paphiopedilums are sensitive to salt build-up, so occasionally flush the compost with plain water to prevent mineral accumulation. Reduce feeding in winter when growth slows.

Repotting
Repot Paphiopedilums every 1–2 years, or when the potting mix begins to break down. Use a fine, moisture-retentive orchid mix (often containing bark, perlite, and sometimes sphagnum moss). Choose a pot that just fits the root system, as they prefer to be slightly snug rather than overpotted.
